CIOB to provide subsidised training courses to scale up BIM capability

The CIOB is hosting a series of BIM training courses, subsidised for members but open to all, to help upskill managers and employers on Level 2 BIM.

Taking place in London and Leeds, the courses are targeted at anyone in a construction or project management role, or who is responsible for tendering or responding to prequalification questionnaires.

The CIOB hopes that the training will “help the industry demonstrate that it has a broad sweep of key staff able to use BIM techniques and that it can meet the requirements of government prequalification questionnaires which will demand BIM capabilities from April 2016”.

Courses are available over two days, or alternatively five evenings over two weeks, in March, April, June, September and October.

Places are being offered at a substantial discount to CIOB members. The price for all members, or those working for Chartered Building Companies, Chartered Building Consultancies and in CIOB Training Partnerships, is £149 with non-members paying £599.

The course will be led by Dave Monswhite, an associate director at Turner & Townsend Project Management.

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles of a BIM approach;
  • Recognise typical models, technology and the common data environment;
  • Identify the business case for BIM in any project;
  • Improve safety and the management of risk by using BIM principles;
  • Respond to an Employer’s Information Request and develop a BIM execution plan;
  • Understand how BIM requirements can be implemented within the project’s legal, procurement and tendering framework;
  • Recognise the legal and project risk implications of BIM in terms of intellectual property, insurances and potential liabilities;
  • Understand how BIM principles can be used to improve performance.

The BIM courses are part of a new and expanded range of training courses for members, which includes training offered by CIOB staff, independent organisations such as BRE and the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management and commercial training providers.

“We are offering high-quality interactive training, with 12 to 15 delegates per course. Some training will be offered directly through the CIOB, such as training around the [forthcoming] new edition of the CIOB Code of Estimating Practice, and some are from other providers offering CIOB members a discounted rate,” explained CIOB commercial director Jacqueline Balian.

Further CIOB education initiatives are expected to follow this year, including the launch of a “CPD Academy”.

  1. Good stuff and futuristic ideas. Do you have any training scheduled for Africa especially Zambia or the Southern Africa Region?

  2. Good day,

    I would like to know if you have online ‘subsidised training courses to scale up BIM capability’ for members based outside the UK.

    Thank you.

    Best regards,
    Aubrey
