‘Game changer’ Information Protocol published to replace CIC BIM Protocol

A new protocol to support contracts involving the new BIM standard 19650-2 has been published as part of implementation guidance accompanying the UK BIM Framework.

The UK BIM Framework provides the fundamental step towards digital transformation of the UK’s built environment industry. The Framework is based on the ISO 19650 series, which first developed out of the UK’s BIM Level 2 but also embraces global digital perspectives.

The latest guidance is described as a critical tool to help accelerate the uptake of BIM. It provides an example of what could be included in an Information Protocol to be used when conforming to BS EN ISO 19650-2:2018 for projects and their appointments. In the past such guidance has been provided by the CIC BIM Protocol.

The new document has been published by BSI, the Centre for Digital Built Britain, the UK BIM Alliance and the Construction Industry Council.

It has been authored by Andrew Croft, senior associate at Beale & Company Solicitors, May Winfield, associate director at Buro Happold, and Simon Lewis, partner at Womble Bond Dickinson.

Winfield said: “The BS EN ISO 19650 is a game changer in seeking to progress, and comprehensively align, BIM and information management practices across the industry, and worldwide. We hope the industry will find this a helpful document in their journey to incorporate BS EN ISO 19650 into their projects in a clear and risk-managed way.”

Lewis added: “The publication of the Information Protocol marks another step in the development of BIM as an international standard and puts in place what the authors hope will be a useful and accessible resource to help parties structure clear and workable contracts. I have very much enjoyed working with May and Andrew on what has been a lengthy but never less than exciting and interesting project.”

Croft said: “We would encourage the legal and construction industry to familiarise themselves with the Information Protocol and make appropriate use of the Information Protocol in all contracts to which BS EN ISO 19650 applies.”
