Battersea Power Station to build glass elevator inside chimney

A glass elevator that will travel 109m to the top of one of Battersea Power Station’s chimneys is to be constructed as part of the £9bn development.

The so-called Chimney Lift, to be built in the north west chimney, will also feature a viewing platform at the top, offering views of the capital’s skyline.

Visitors will travel up the interior of the chimney in the custom-built glass elevator to the 109m-high summit.

It forms one of a number of event and attraction spaces at the project, which is being overseen by construction manager Mace and is set to open to the public in 2021.

Other spaces include the Venue which has the flexibility to host a wide variety of cultural events ranging from live music, product launches, fashion shows, conferences, dinners and other entertainment. The Event Box, the main space, can hold up to 1,500 people

Meanwhile, the Control Room features a complete 1930s Art Deco interior, overlooking the Turbine Hall through a series of bay windows and balconies.
