Bouygues uses smart sensors to monitor dust and noise

Bouygues is using smart noise, dust, and vibration monitoring at the Hallsville Quarter Phase 3 development in Canning Town, East London.

Tech venture Com’in, set up in 2019 and backed jointly by Bouygues Construction and Colas, has devised the smart sensors to detect and measure a project’s impact on the environment.

A network of sensors feed back the data in real time, to the Com’in back office, which analyses the data and send warnings by SMS or email to the operations manager on site when authorised levels have been exceeded.

The data is recorded on a web-based dashboard that the operations manager can use to decide whether to take action, and what action to take.

On the Canning Town site, for example, the web of sensors are able to pinpoint the block the noise is coming from, and which tool is causing it.

“Around 30 different projects have used the Com’in system across France, Monaco, UK, Switzerland, and the US,” Bouygues said.

“As well as noise, dust, and vibrations it can be used to monitor other pollutants too such as those in water, as well as dirt on roads and traffic jams.”

Projects which have used Com’in include: monitoring noise and vibration levels at a renovation of the European Space Agency in central Paris; monitoring water quality at a lock project on the River Seine; and monitoring and identifying noise at a project in Monaco city.
