CCL ready to demo wireless concrete monitoring tech on UK sites

CCL, the specialist in engineered solutions for structures, has reported significant interest from construction contractors, precast concrete companies and concrete frame specialists since becoming the UK and Ireland distributor for Maturix, a smart concrete monitoring system.

Maturix is designed to provide accurate, continuous, real-time data on concrete strength and maturity via a probe fixed within the concrete that wirelessly transmits data.

BIM+ first reported on the technology last year. Last month, CCL agreed a deal with the technology’s creator, Sensohive, to be the preferred distributor for all in-situ suspended slab and precast applications in the UK and Ireland. CCL is also the preferred supplier of Maturix for all HS2-related projects.

Luke Kani Zihni, senior precast engineer from CCL, said: "The clear advantages that the Maturix system offers both in-situ and precast concrete applications has generated significant interest from a wide variety of potential users. We are now working with a number of potential customers to demo the system and look forward to announcing some positive feedback in the near future."

Concrete maturity principle

The technology is based on the principle of concrete maturity, which explains the interrelation between temperature, time, maturity and strength of concrete. Following the pour, the monitoring system measures the temperature of the concrete every ten minutes, and combines this with the amount of time that has passed since the monitoring was activated to provide accurate predictions of strength and the amount of time remaining until the concrete reaches the predetermined strength.

Using flexible hardware that allows the probe to be cut away and left permanently inside the concrete once monitoring is no longer required, the system uploads data to the cloud. The data can be retrieved in real time from any location via online software, which is compatible with any internet-enabled mobile device or computer.

Casper Harlev, CEO and co-founder of Sensohive added: "The partnership with CCL is a great opportunity for us – they are experts in post-tensioning and pre-tensioned concrete technology and this is where our solution can create great value in delivering real-time insights. With CCL’s strong position in the market and its focus on innovation, we are sure that the collaboration is the right step for both parties."
