My Digital Life: David Philp, Aecom

Welcome to a new interview series on BIMplus: My Digital Life. First up is David Philp, director – digital strategy and innovation at Aecom, digital impact director at the Construction Innovation Hub, and chair of the Chartered Institute of Building’s digital technologies special interest group. Here he uses one word to accelerate the adoption of BIM and tells us why he needs to keep cables hidden from sight.

What new built environment digital innovation you’ve seen recently really excites you?

There is growing innovation in how we capture field data and monitor progress remotely, At Aecom, we are increasingly using these technologies to add an immersive field perspective as part of the digital and asset delivery to our clients.

What single thing would help accelerate construction’s digital adoption?

Interoperability.

Who do you follow on social media about BIM and digital construction and why?

@Neil_BIM: I like the variety of his posts from construction economics and good signposting to interesting links about data innovation.

What was the last app you downloaded and why?

Drafts: great app for text capture, editing and creating productivity workflows.

What’s the tech bane of your life?

Cable management: I am OCD about keeping cables out of sight!

Mac or PC/iOS or Android?

Hybrid of PC and iOS (phone and tablet), but want to go full Apple this year – I find I am doing more and more in my iPad using custom shortcuts.

Do you have any smart home features or other digital gadgets?

Heck yes! My smart home office is a bit Tony Stark [billionaire tech guru and alter ego of Iron Man in the Marvel comics and movies – ed.], gone a tad overboard with wireless Hue lighting and smart plugs admittedly. Gadgets aplenty, but I love camera tech and playing about with a three-axis gimbal (liberated from my daughter!).
