After nearly four years as digital lead at Vinci Building, Marco Bonelli has joined construction technology integrator Sektor as vice-president of digital services. Sektor was founded in 2018 and helps companies to source, deploy and operate best-in-class technologies in construction and real estate.

Bonelli told BIMplus: “In construction, innovation and digital is often seen as something that’s nice to have, but it’s still not a fundamental part of the business. In those cases, innovation is seen as a cost, while in reality innovation can prove to be extremely profitable – given the correct approach.

“Our aim is to help customers to accelerate technology adoption, boost user engagement and lower the cost of operation of their selected solutions. As a result we prove and maximise the ROI of innovation.”

He added: “In our view, true innovation lies in its scalability. Our goal is not just to introduce cutting-edge technologies, but to ensure that innovative solutions thrive and reach their full potential.”

“I want to do work that I love: I want to improve construction, not just for me, but the industry.”

Bonelli first came across Sektor in 2019 at Autodesk University in London. “When I was a general contractor, I found that if I needed support for IT or HR, it was very easy to find – similarly for BIM. But when I looked for support for construction technologies, my options were extremely limited – there was a big gap in the market. Sektor fills that gap.”

As well as Vinci, Sektor also works with multinational companies such as Ferrovial, Spie Batignolles, Parsons, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, and CCC in the Middle East, to name a few.

Reflecting on Vinci

Bonelli reflected on his time at Vinci and his reasons for taking the new role. “I’m proud of what we achieved at Vinci in the previous four years. I felt it was the right time to embrace a new adventure to develop as a construction technologist and to contribute to construction from a different angle.

“After my experience, the opportunity to join Sektor and to be at the forefront of digital transformation was one that was hard to pass up. Joining Sektor presents me with the possibility to work on some of the largest and most prestigious projects globally, including the likes of the new JFK Terminal One in New York, the Uberseequartier in Hamburg and the Integrated Casino Resort project at the Ellinikon in Athens.”

He concluded: “I want to do work that I love: I want to improve construction, not just for me, but the industry. With Sektor, I get to help not just one business, but as many businesses as possible to build better, faster and cheaper, not just in the UK, but across the world.”
